Two National Forests,
Tennessee's Cherokee And North Carolina's Nantahala!
RIVER AND LAKE
Many visitors and landowners see Sassafras Ridge with it's 50-mile views of distant blue ridges in three states, trails, colorful flowers and herbs as a seasonal escape ... while some plan to eventually live in the mountains. As if this abundance is not enough, Sassafras, located in the Tri-State corner of Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina, is surrounded by two national forests.
The Cherokee National Forest, twenty minutes to the west, consists of 633,000 acres and includes the famous Ocoee River... the 1996 Olympic venue for kayaking and whitewater rafting events, a World Cup site for kayak racing, and the most popular whitewater rafting river on the East coast.
The Ocoee river empties into the Ocoee Lake which, on a spring or summer day, is dotted with jet skis, glass bottom boats and speed boats. The Cherokee also has miles of hiking trails and two sandy beaches for swimming. A great experience is the panoramic view from the top of Chilhowee Mountain overlooking Lake Ocoee.
There is also the Hiawasse River, noted for its large trout and bass fishing, and the sport of tubing over its ice cold rapids. To the east of Sassafras Ridge is the 92,000 acre Nantahala National Forest in Cherokee County, North Carolina. The Nantahala is loaded with wildlife, beautiful flora, magnificent natural waterways and almost every conceivable outdoor activity, including horseback riding, mountain climbing and hang gliding.
If you want to take your chances, the beautiful Harrahs Cherokee Casino on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in the Nantahala, is only an hour and a half away. And in the nearby town of Murphy, NC- only twenty-five minutes away- is the new, $110 Million River Valley Cherokee Casino and Hotel that opened in 2017!
And on your journey up from Atlanta, make sure you stop at the famous Mercier's Orchard in Blue Ridge Georgia, pick up some of their world famous delicious fried apple or peach pies, apple cinnamon bread, or taste some of their delicious all natural wines!
